The American Friends of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra (AFSPP) was established in 1999 by a small but dedicated group of individuals determined to preserve Russia's oldest and most prestigious orchestra. Incorporated as a non-profit entity in the United States, the American Friends of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic has been granted 501C3 status in accordance with the provisions of the United States Tax Code of the Internal Revenue Status.
Due to the current financial crisis in Russia, funding for cultural institutions has essentially been eliminated. These circumstances have created a dire situation for the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the musicians of which are paid approximately $40 per month. The American Friends of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Incorporated (AFSPP) aims to establish a network of support in the United States among individuals and groups committed to ensuring the continuance of one of Russia's greatest musical traditions. By providing for the most basic requirements of the Orchestra, the AFSPP can make a difference in the near- and long-term viability of the Orchestra well into the 21st century.
The mission of the AFSPP entails providing for the purchase of new musical instruments and the repair of older instruments when needed. The organization further seeks to facilitate important cultural exchanges between Russia and the United States by supporting the St. Petersburg Philharmonic's performances in America. The AFSPP also seeks to facilitate the appearance of American concert artists with the Orchestra, in consultation with the Orchestra's Music Director and Chief Conductor.
